Alon Levin allegedly rolled back odometers by tens of thousands of miles.
SOUTH HACKENSACK -- The owner of a motor vehicle design shop used special equipment to roll back odometers, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.
HQ Custom design, a a motor vehicle design shop owned by Alon Levin, 52, specializes in commercial and luxury custom conversions.
In addition, Levin, of Hillsdale, used diagnostic tools that could program a vehicle odometer to display any number of miles and conceal the actual mileage, Grewal said. Investigators found that Levin was lowering odometer readings by tens of thousands of miles.
Odometer rollback schemes can affect vehicle resale values, insurance premiums and maintenance scheduling, Grewal said.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office White Collar Crimes Unit began its investigation in 2013. Levin was charged Thursday with computer related theft.
Levin was issued a summons to appear in Bergen County Central Municipal Court on Tuesday.
