Bergen County paid former county prosecutor John Molinelli more than $14,000 after his replacement, Gurbir S. Grewal, was sworn in, the Record reported.

Molinelli received $635 for each of his 13 years of full service, or about $8,000, and stayed on the payroll for two weeks after Grewal took over, making $6,346, documents show.

The one-day-per year agreement was not based on any contractual or salary obligation. The county said such payments had been made to outgoing prosecutors in the past. Molinelli said the two weeks' payment was vacation time.

Gov. Chris Christie appointed Grewal as Acting Bergen County Prosecutor at the beginning of the year. Molinelli returned to private practice at the law firm of Price, Mease, Shulman and D'Arminio in Woodcliff Lake.
