The Bergenfield Board of Health will oversee testing of public water fountains and at other facilities.

BERGENFIELD - Suez Water will try to determine the source of lead at six out of seven of the borough's schools, as the borough's Board of Health oversees testing of public drinking water, according to Mayor Norman Schmelz.

"I have been informed that SUEZ Water will be performing site tests on the water before it enters our school buildings to help us determine the source of the elevated lead levels," Schmelz said in a statement Thursday.

Tests revealed elevated lead levels at the high school and five other schools in the district. The results were released on Wednesday.

"The district should be commended for immediately disconnecting all drinking water locations and for purchasing bottled water for usage by our children and the staff until (the) drinking water is safe," the mayor said.

Schmelz said the Bergenfield Board of Health will oversee testing of public water fountains and water at other facilities, including the public library.

"If you have any concerns about lead contaminated water in your household it is recommended that you allow your water to run for a few minutes before drinking or using for cooking," Schmelz said.
