WOODCLIFF LAKE -- A 3-year-old girl nearly drowned Sunday night at the Hilton Woodcliff Lake, police said.

The child was swimming in the indoor pool at the hotel, Woodcliff Lake Police Lt. James Uhl said.

A family friend saw that the girl had sunk to the bottom of the pool. The friend pulled her out of the pull and administered first aid, Uhl said.

The girl was awake by the time police arrived. The child's mother was nearby, so it's not clear how the child ended up sinking, Uhl said.

Emergency responders administered oxygen before taking the girl to Hacknsack University Medical Center, Uhl said.

The Bergen County Department of Health Services is investigating, Uhl said.

Officers said there was no lifeguard at the pool, Uhl said. New Jersey does not require lifeguards at hotel pools.

A manager at the hotel, who declined to give his name, said the hotel was in compliance with health regulations.
