Bergen County freeholders unanimously passed an ordinance banning circuses, exotic animal shows from county property.
HACKENSACK - Bergen County freeholders have adopted an ordinance banning circuses, along with other exotic animal shows, from appearing on county property, according to the League of Humane Voters in New Jersey.
Ordinance 16-13 passed unanimously on Wednesday. It covers exhibitions, shows and performances on Bergen County property, including parks.
NorthJersey.com reports the ordinance is likely the first of its kind in New Jersey and specifies a dozen categories of animals, including tigers, kangaroos, snakes and elephants. Horses, dogs or other domesticated animals are not included.
While the shows are banned from county property, the ordinance does not address shows on private or municipal properties, according to NorthJersey.com.
