EAST RUTHERFORD -- A North Arlington man killed himself Tuesday by jumping out of a moving vehicle on Route 3, police said.
Jorge J. Torres, 27, jumped out of the vehicle at about 5:05 a.m. on Route 3 westbound just before the exit for Route 120, East Rutherford Police Chief Larry Minda said.
Torres was in the roadway and showed no signs of life when police arrived, Minda said. Officers initiated CPR but Torres was unresponsive.
Route 3 fatality snarls traffic
Torres was pronounced dead at 5:31 a.m. The driver, a 24-year-old also from North Arlington, was not charged.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Sheriff's Office and New Jersey State Police helped investigate.
Police shut down two lanes of the westbound highway for about four hours after the incident. Delays stretched up to 25 minutes, 511nj.org said.
The highway reopened at about 9:45 a.m.
