Police hunt driver who ran down man in wheelchair

The 78-year-old victim was thrown 20 feet and suffered 6 broken ribs and a possible broken hip, police said.

LEONIA - Police are looking for the driver of a Buick SUV who fled after striking an elderly man crossing an intersection in a wheelchair.

The 78-year-old victim was attempting to cross at the Leonia Avenue intersection when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle on Fort Lee Road, according to Leonia Police Chief Thomas P. Rowe.

The victim and wheelchair were thrown about 20 feet before landing on Fort Lee Road. The man suffered six broken ribs, a broken clavicle and a possibly broken hip, the chief said.

"The front skid plate from the striking vehicle was recovered at the scene of the accident," Rowe said.

Police determined the part came from a 2016 Buick Encore SUV. A witness told police the vehicle was a dark color, the chief said.
