The accident at 1 a.m. on Tuesday shut down the tunnel's center tube for more than 3 hours
WEEHAWKEN -- A motorcyclist badly hurt in a crash that shut the Lincoln Tunnel's center tube overnight was unlicensed, police said.
The motorcyclist, 24-year-old Andre Williams of Englwood, was admitted to Jersey City Medical Center in critical condition following the 1 a.m. crash, said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police. His condition remained critical Tuesday afternoon.
There was no indication any other cars were involved in the accident, which occurred while Williams was on the New Jersey side of the tunnel headed toward Manhattan, Pentangelo said. He said Williams was issued a summons for driving without a license.
The tunnel's north and south tubes tubes remained open, and tunnel traffic continued in both directions following the crash and throughout the investigation.
But the tunnel's center tube was shut down following the accident, and remained closed until 4:31 a.m., Pentangelo said.
Motorists who were in the tunnel at the time of the accident were trapped inside for nearly two hours, before police began to back vehicles out at 2:42 a.m., Pentangelo said.
Another motorcycle crash at the Lincoln Tunnel, on July 27, killed a 23-year-old Brooklyn woman, Yennifer Blanco-Liz, who was riding on the back of the bike.
On Monday, the Hudson County Prosecutor's office announced that the 35-year-old Bronx man operating the motorcycle, Peter C. McDaniel, had been charged with death by auto, after an investigation revealed he was traveling at twice the 35-mph speed limit as he emerged from the tunnel and struck a wall.
