The students got into a "heated argument" over cigarette smoke seeping into a dorm building.
MAHWAH -- Two students at Ramapo College of New Jersey were charged by police after they fought about cigarette smoke flowing into a dorm building and one man pulled out a knife, police said.
Nicholas Caramica, 19, of Wyckoff, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, said Mahwah Lt. Philip Tangel.
Caramica, got into a "heated argument" on Saturday with Simon Petrov, 22, an exchange student and Alexander Irasek, 22, from Arlington, Va., because he disagreed with them smoking outside of the College Park Apartments, a dorm complex at the college, Tangel said.
Irasek is not a student at the college and is now banned from campus. Caramica and Petrov were interim suspended, said Cathleen Davey, a spokeswoman for the college.
Caramica went into the dorm room at the college and brought out a Leatherman knife, typically used for hunting and fishing, Tangel said. A struggle ensued and Petrov and Irasek knocked the knife out of Caramica's hands.
Campus security and Mahwah police arrived shortly after.
Petrov and Irasek were charged with simple assault. All three sustained minor injuries and refused additional medical attention. They were released after being charged.
