GARFIELD -- The two buildings struck by a three-alarm fire Sunday have been demolished, officials said.
The Red Cross helped seven families, or a total of 23 people relocate Sunday night after 101, 103 and 105 Jewell Street were burned in a Sunday morning blaze.
103 and 105, the three-story houses where the fire started, were demolished, Michael Marsh, emergency management coordinator for Garfield, said. Officials mistakenly said Sunday that 101 and 103 were the source of the fire.
Firefighters spent hours battling the blaze, and were on scene through Monday morning when the fire rekindled in the rubble of the two buildings, Marsh said. The Bergen County Arson squad has listed the official cause of the fire as undetermined because of the extent of the damage, but tenants said they believed a faulty air conditioner sparked the blaze.
Residents of 101 Jewell St. should be able to return after the building undergoes minor repairs, Marsh said.
