MONTVALE -- The first Wegmans in Bergen County is set to open this fall.
The store announced Wednesday that it had begun hiring and training full-time workers at its Montvale store, at the former site of a longtime farm.
Wegmans plans to employ 500 people at the Montvale store, including 450 locally. About 200 of the jobs are full-time.
The 108,000-square-foot store will include a liquor store and a burger restaurant. The store on the corner of West Grand Avenue and Mercedes Drive will be the ninth Wegmans in New Jersey, after an eighth location opens in Hanover in the summer.
The New York-based grocery chain has more than 90 stores across six East Coast states. The first New Jersey store opened in 1999 in Princeton.
The first Wegmans in Bergen County replaces DePiero's, one of the last farms in the area. It's part of a 225,000-square-foot shopping center called The Shoppes at DePiero Farm. The center started construction in 2015.

The DePiero family entered into a joint venture with S. Hekemian Group, a developer based in Englewood, to close the farm and build the shopping center. The family said the farm was no longer viable, though many residents clamored for it to stay.
Habit Burger Grill, Chipotle, Ulta Beauty, European Wax Center, Starbucks, 1808 Fine Men's Barber, Urban Place Farm to Table, FedEx/Kinko's and Not Your Average Joe's have also committed to leasing space at the shopping center.
Montvale has undergone a tumultuous few years, with Mercedes announcing plans to move its headquarters from the town to Georgia, while A&P, also based in Montvale, filed for bankruptcy. The borough has bounced back somewhat, with Memorial Sloan Kettering and Sharp planning to move in.
