NEW MILFORD - A borough man was arrested after a 16-year-old girl told police she had been sexually abused by him for three years, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Monday.

Peter Mitchell, 43, of River Road, abused the teenager multiple times in New Milford and in River Edge, according to the prosecutor.

The teenager said Mitchell was an acquaintance.

The New Milford Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Special Victims Unit, who in turn contacted the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

It was later determined that some of the alleged sexual abuse occurred in River Edge. The River Edge Police Department also joined the investigation, the prosecutor said in a statement.

Mitchell, who is an emergency medical technician, charged with sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child, the prosecutor said in a news release.

He was held in the Bergen County Jail on $200,000 full bail.
