HACKENSACK -- Gurbil Grewal will be sworn in Monday as Acting Bergen County Prosecutor.
A ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in the courtroom of Bergen County Assignment Judge Bonnie J. Mizdol. Grewal, a Glen Rock resident, is also taking the oath of office Monday morning at a private ceremony in Trenton.
Gov. Chris Christie picked Grewal, a Democrat, to replace retiring prosecutor John L. Molinelli, who has held the post since 2002. Molinelli plans to return to private practice at the firm of Price, Meese, Shulman and D'Arminio in Woodcliff Lake.
Grewal leaves his job as chief of the Economic Crimes Unit at the U.S. Attorney's Office, a position he's held since 2014. He's worked at the USAO since 2010.
Grewal is Sikh and will become the first county prosecutor in the state to practice the religion.
Sen. Kevin O'Toole, a Republican who represents parts of northwestern Bergen County, praised the choice.
"I think he's a spectacular appointment," O'Toole said. "He's got amazing credentials."
Christie previously nominated Grewal to replace Molinelli in 2013, but the Senate failed to approve him. O'Toole expressed confidence that the Senate would make Grewarl the permanent prosecutor given a second opportunity.
