Matthew S. Chaseman, 46, of Maywood, was shot after crashing near the exit ramp from Route 17 northbound to West Passaic Street.
ROCHELLE PARK - A man allegedly armed with a BB gun who was shot by police after a traffic accident last month was moved from a hospital room to a jail cell over the holidays, authorities said.
Matthew S. Chaseman, 46, of Maywood, was shot after crashing near the exit ramp from Route 17 northbound to West Passaic Street. He was treated for lower leg injuries at Hackensack University Medical Center before being moved to the Bergen County jail over the holidays.
Chaseman has been charged with aggravated assault and is being held on $250,000 bail, according to a spokesman with the Bergen County Sheriff Office.
Authorities said Chaseman crashed his vehicle sometime before the shooting, which occurred about 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 14.
The crash occurred near 218 Route 17 North, an office building with tenants including Bergen County Social Services.
After Chaseman was shot, officers said they recovered a BB gun from the scene. The orange tip of the BB gun had been painted black, authorities said.
A hearing date on the aggravated assault charge has not been set.
