Police Chief Benjamin Ramos was suspended after Lt. Matthew Finck notified the borough of his intent to sue for $10 million.
PALISADES PARK - The borough council on Tuesday voted to suspend Police Chief Benjamin Ramos without pay for 30 days over allegations that he harassed and retaliated against a subordinate, The Record reported.
Palisades Park police Lt. Matthew Finck has accused the chief of "repeated hostile conduct." In November, Finck notified the borough of his intent to sue and seek damages of $10 million, according to the report.
Councilman Henry Ruh said there were about a "half dozen" allegations against Ramos and that some of them appeared to be the chief "asserting his authority," according to the report. The council decided in a 5-0 vote to suspend the chief during a meeting Tuesday night.
None of the allegations were made public.
Ramos was ordered to complete a workplace training class and undergo a fitness-for-duty examination before returning to work, according to the report.
Ramos was not available for comment.
A police officer since 2000, Ramos surrendered his badge in 2002 over charges he assaulted his girlfriend. The charges were dismissed and Ramos was reinstated, according to the report.
