PATERSON -- Two men were in stable condition after they were shot on a city street late Friday afternoon, authorities said Saturday.

Police were alerted to the shooting on the 300 block of 10th Avenue by the city's gunfire detection system around 4:45 p.m., but both victims were gone when officers arrived, according to Detective Lt. Patrick Murray, commander of the Ceasefire Unit.

About 40 minutes later, the wounded men arrived at Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Murray said. A relative brought one of the men, an 18-year-old from Paterson, to the hospital while the other man, 25, of Carlstadt, hailed a taxi to the trauma center.

The victims were part of a group gathered outside a store on 10th Avenue when the shots were fired, the lieutenant added.

"As a result of the gunfire, both victims attempted to flee the area on foot, realizing that they were shot as they fled," Murray said in an email.

The gunfire came hours before a 19-year-old man was killed and a woman was wounded in another shooting around 2 a.m. Saturday on North 3rd Street. Police later said the two shootings appeared to be unrelated.

Anyone with information on the Friday shooting was asked to call Paterson Police Detective Rolando Polio or Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Detective Michael Boone of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
